Hey all.....I have several digital cameras....ok, more than several!
I have used a refurb Nikon D50 for over 10 yrs. All is stil good except there is something developing in the viewfinder....like a silver thread around a part of the pic, almost pulsating. I am guessing the LCD is going OR the picture sensor......eventually.
W/ that in mind I just got a refurb Nikon D3200. So far all is well BUT....I have a Nikon 35mm lens on the camera and I can BARELY SEE THE FOCAL POINTS....when I 1/2 press the button and you see the red focal pt......If the lighting is bad, I can not tell if its central, or off to the side......
My question, are these focal points suppose to be so DARK?...AND SMALL? ALL my other camera have a square in the center that lights up briefly, at least you can see it....these pts are almost minuscule in size.
Is there some adjustment for this? Thanks for imput

Glad you changed memory cards and have your display working. My Q: is the 35mm Nikon lens you have an AF-S lens, or an old lens from your D50? The older AF or AF D lenses without focus motors will not autofocus on your camera. Just wondered if this was one of your issues?

AF-s..........I only bought it a couple of yrs ago because it was good in low light and finally got to use it last august....did great.
The 35mm will focus....it was the focus points in the lens? camera? that have been difficult to see.....compared to all of my other cameras.....black, tiny, really tiny and a faintly viewable 'box' in the center w/ the dot...but so faint in low light you would be pressed to see it.

Had a similar problem (D50) until I removed the dog hair from the mirror carriage.

You'll note it says class 4 are fine for stills and class 6 for video. You said the rep told you that you needed a class 10.

They include a list like this in all their manuals. It is a way to make money through endorsements and to ensure their product will work. If a card were incompatible it would affect something related to writing to the card or reading from it. I'm saying it can't change a menu selection.

I don't know either why your menu option changed while you were working with the card but I'm sure it is coincidental. Correlation does not prove causation.

One thing you can do is put the other card back in and see if the display reverts. If so then I'd have to change my belief.

Actually there was an issue w/ that transcend card. The lcd would say the card was corrupted or not working properly....I would remove it, put it in several times, and THEN it would work for a couple pic. Infact when I was talking w/ the rep....and she asked me about the card, when I took it out and put it back in, that error message came up again. Whatever the cause, and I do agree w/ you that a 4 and upward would probably work, the transcend did not. So I sent it back and exchanged it.....
It seems ok now.......
Thank you for your imput, everyone. Appreciated.

It doesn't say others won't work. It says that these have been "tested and approved." I have never had an SDHC or XC card not work (Except the two that were bad.) I've used Transcend, Pony, Sony, Kingston and others in my D90, D7000 and D7100 without having any trouble. The two that failed were from a batch of Lexar. But that was years ago and none have failed since. Now I mostly use Sandisk 95 mb/s but my Transcends and Sonys fine. (The cost has dropped over the years and the Sandisks don't cost but a couple bucks more now--and I used to know some of the Sandisk people.)

Thats all I know.
I use all different cards in my other cameras but....this one is different and I suspect probably not the only one.
I'm thinking its like what they have done w/ there batteries....putting a chip in it so no 3rd party batteries can be used.....well now the 3rd party folk have gotten smarter.
I'm sure you know how the game is played....
Thanks for imput!

Stranger things have happened. I had a friend who when on a trip overseas, found his brand new super zoom camera was yielding 80% out of focus shots. That's a 20% yield. The previous version of that camera he owned, yielded better than 80% in focus. He shoots a lot so it was not a user error problem.

Chatter on the web said to use faster SD cards. He tried that and they worked! The in-focus yield improved greatly, not to 80% but 60-70 which was acceptable.

Now that the card problem is solved, let's look at the black tiny, really tiny dots. Those are the 11 focus points the D3200 has. You change which one is selected by using the multidirectional wheel thing on the camera rear and as a focus point is selected a red light will briefly flash there. When you're ready to shoot, push the shutter button halfway down (or push the back focus button if you're programmed that way) and a red light will again briefly flash over the chosen focus point.

If you want to return to the center focus point, push the OK in the middle of the four direction switch.

Thanks. I am sure in the outside shots, there won't be much of a problem. But when I used the 35 in the house and the light wasn't that good, it was difficult to see the dots. Yes, the center red one lit up but honestly, I couldn't see exactly where it was placed among the dots.....it could have been focusing to the left, top etc....so I can hit the ok button and it will return it to the center.....ok.....it just would be nice to see clearly where I am.....incase I decided to bounce around.....
Thanks for tips.....

I can see a possible connection there particularly if he was using continuious shooting and had the camera set to release priority. The cpu could get backed up saving the images and slow down focusing.

I can also see a connection if the camera burps on the card and won't let anything else happen.

I just can't see how it would change a menu selection.

Ya know, I can't see how the card can make a diff in menu selection either. However it did....immediately. I was told to do a 'reset' for setup and.....well the wrench and camera.....I don't rememer if I did it when I first got the camera last week.....
BUT something else did happen.
Yesterday I went into to make a change in the 'wrench' and when I closed out the aperature thingy was gone again.....hmmmmm
So I did a reset and it came back.....I probably should call and ask why that would have, could have happened, unless there is an issue w/ this refurb.
All I know if the Nikon D50 I bought is 2005 is still going strong....and its a refurb. I'm hoping they did as well w/ this one......enjoyed your posts
Thanks

That suggests the graphic display is the default. But I can't see why it keeps getting undone.

Today I will experiment. Maybe go in and change a setting but not one related to the aperture wheel....and see if I have to do a reset.....if I do, there is a problem, I feel sure. You should not have to continually do a reset
