Our church is having a photo shoot for all fathers who will be posing in & behind stand-up figures of the Avengers heroes. (I would prefer biblical heroes but...) I've been asked to shoot it. Wondering what the best camera settings & lens setup on my DSLR might be. Thinking ISO 200, f/11, aperture priority, focal length of 55 mm. Suggestions?

Go to your source: Ask one of the prophets. ;) Have you ever used a DSLR before? If not I suggest you set the mode to 'A' for automatic....and pray to something.

Outdoors? - may need fill flash depending on time of day, a must for mid-day.
ISO 200 is a good place to start. You can try aperture priority mode - f.5.6 or 6.3 to start. Camera will decide shutter speed. Adjust from there. I like to shoot in RAW or RAW+JPG for best editing. JPEGS may be okay for this if you hit exposures well.
Focal length of 55MM is arguable depending on who you talk to, but should work fine on a crop sensor camera giving you an effective field of view of 82-88MM depending on brand of camera. Perfect for head and head and shoulders shots. Workable for full body shots. Not so good for large group shots.
Were not some of the biblical heroes avengers? lol
Good luck. Let us know how it went, and happy early fathers day!

It would depend on the lighting unless you use a flash. f/8 would give good depth of field. - Dave

ignore didereaux, i think its just artgrandpa back under another fake name. He likes criticizing everyone and uploads pics he steals from websites. last time it was houses. this time its birds.

When I do church directories here is my set up:
take one studio light with a large umbrella. set your camera on a tripod centered with the umbrella.
iso 100 f 11 manual 1/60
shutter speed depends on how far the light is from the subject,
you can check the exposure with your histogram

Not knowing what camera or lens you would be using. I use a Nikon D7100 and for this would use the 18-140 lens. Camera settings ISO 400 P mode WB Auto or Cloudy Matrix metering and TTL/BL
0EV on flash and camera. These settings should be good for outdoor work. Indoor setting should be about the same maybe change flash to TTL. This should give you good color and very acceptable pictures. Try so sample shots if at all possible. These are the settings I use for this type of event.

Watch out for glare from those stand-up figures - especially if you're using flash.

Good thought. I'll set it at a bit of an angle to avoid bounce-back. Thanks!

I question your tacky sense of humor. Most members on this forum are friendly and helpful.

How lame. He indicates he has a church function to photograph and he has a religious belief and you chirp in with...."pray to something".
