My wife and I are headed to Stockholm in July to visit family and friends. This is my first trip to Sweden and I'm trolling for advice on what I should see and/or photograph. We'll visit the old town and go for at least one drive in the countryside, but aside from admiring a new baby our schedule is pretty open. I'm sure we will visit some museums, particularly Natural History and Science, though we don't have these nailed down yet.
I'm taking my Nikon D7000 and three lenses, the Tamron 18-270 zoom, the Tokina f4 12-28 wide angle zoom and the MicroNikkor 60 macro lens. I promised my wife I wouldn't bring my travel tripod to lug around and I'm trying to decide if I'll need my Metz flash unit. Any suggestions are welcome!
Have you thought about asking the people you are visiting what they recommend? After all, they do live there...

Go on one of the cruise ships to Aland spectacular scenery and great food. The Vasa ship is a must too and take a ride on the subway they have beautiful murals painted at each stop. The changing of the guard by the palace we enjoyed.
They also have great music in some of the parks in the evening. Have a great trip.
Of course we will ask the people we are going to visit. How ever they are my wife's friends and she is arranging the trip. I wanted to get some insights from photographers, who have a different way of looking at the world from the average person.

This won't help with photography. Be very careful when photographing beautiful Swedish women. The wife may get suspicious of your intentions
Two suggestions. Take a ferryboat trip out to the islands... makes a really good day out and you can get off on some of the remote islands and the ferry will pick you you on the return. Second... get up really early (0530-0630) and walk the quayside and back streets of Gamla Stan. Was there in September and the fog and sun breaking through was stunning
My wife and I went to Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Uppsala for two weeks with plenty of photo opportunities. I only took my D7000 with my Tamron 18-270 lens and it was plenty. Beautiful country and wonderful people. Enjoy your trip and p.m. me for more information, if you'd like.

Go to 500px and search for the cities you will be visiting to get ideas. I think you can also do this on Flicker but the photos on 500px are often higher quality.

You'll be happy you brought your flash for taking interior shots of family.
Tallik and Viking have daily ~16 hour ferries to Helsinki (alternatively Tallin or St. Petersburg) that are worth the trip. You will have many photo ops during the ~6 hour cruise through the archipelago.
