Consequent to a discussion of banding in blurred backgrounds that Lighthouse noted in an image I posted in the Critique Section...

Depending on the image, I may choose a moderate blur that retains some color and suggestions of BG forms (using moderate pixel radii in the 25 to 40 pixel range) or a maximally intense "Gaussian Gray" blur (using the maximum of 1000 pixel radius with the greatest possible chromatic averaging approach to gray) .
Below are two comparisons:
The first in which mild banding of a colored, moderate Gaussian blur is resolved to much less perceptible banding with eleven additional passes of moderate Gaussian blur, and...
the second in which an intense 1000 pixel radius "Gaussian Gray" blur with many prominent bands is almost completely resolved with eleven passes of equally strong Gaussian blur. Careful examination will reveal five broad bands.
In summary, banding in a produced blur is just another detail that more blurring can help minimize.
