This seems odd. Apple store employees must submit to a search of their bags, totes, or whatever, before they leave after their shift ends. They have already clocked out, but they are delayed another ten or fifteen minutes, for which they do not have to be paid.

I'll bet down the line someone will start a class action and they all will get back pay. - Dave

It sucks, but it's needed. Amazon is the same way--I have a friend who works there.
Now doing it in front of customers...that's crappy. I wonder what happens if they find something while the customers are watching. A door in the ceiling opens and balloons fall out while a booming voice yells out "Congratulations....you have been caught shoplifting!"

I worked retail in my early adulthood. I've seen some very creative theft.

When I worked for GM Parts Division in the very early 70s you were searched before you went out the back door after clocking out, you would be surprised how many people were
caught trying to steal parts and the ingenious way they did
it.

Work for a defense contractor. Searches going in and out are common. Don't like the rules don't take the job.

I imagine the stakes are higher if someone is caught on the way out.

Sometimes. Right after I started work there some guys were caught on third shift using the equipment to make hang glider frames. That was over 25 years ago. Had a shooting at one of our plants about 9 years ago. Lots of reasons for checking, though theft is the most common.

I can understand the search, but if you have to leave ten or fifteen minutes late every day, you should be paid.

There was a story from years ago about a guy at a construction site who took a wheelbarrow of dirt out every day when he went home. The guard at the gate didn't think anything of it. Then they found out that he was stealing the wheelbarrows. :D

Probably not true, but amusing.

Voluntary search as term of employment. They're not working so no right to pay. Don't have to work there.

I would never steal anything that wouldn't fit in the bed of a pickup.

Remember the girl that went through security screening at the airport in a swim suit to save time?

Well, I guess I won't be applying for a job at the Apple store. It's over an hour and a half away, anyway. :D

What a great idea..... and it worked for a while.
