Yesterday, I put some watermelon rinds on the compost pile hoping for some insect activity this morning. There was one nervous fly on the rind and there was more activity nearby. There were several robber flies which was unusual. I normally see just one at a time. The flying ant and katydid were a bonus. Usual macro setup.

Nice.... I did the watermelon rind years ago... I got house flies... Looks like you get that same variety of Robber fly. Ever notice that they always face towards the ground when perched ?

Nice shots. Compost heaps always seem to yield something interesting. Your red insect looks like he is dancing the Hoke Coke.
