Only if you want to develope diabetes. Leave the sugar OUT of that recipe. Been making cornbread for over 50 years, tried lots of recipes and variations. Not a single good cornbread uses sugar...that is simply crappola from the FoodNetwork.
As I said the recipe is a baxic one, and they added sugar, leave it out and follow the rest of the directions.
Sugar does NOT belong in cornbread!!!!!!!!!

Skip the sugar and add jalapeƱo peppers.
This Youtube segment has great cast iron maintenance and seasoning tips segments after the cornbread recipe.
Good and continuous seasoning and maintaining is what makes cast iron pans cook great and last for lifetimes.
Never trust recipes from a skinny cook or a cook under the age of 50. Chef Paul Prudhomme states in one of his cookbooks that Cajuns like sweet cornbread. I don't.

...and most Cajuns have few or no teeth by age 15. Jes' sayin. ;)
After reading these comments, one thing is for sure. These folks are from the South. I don't have any problem with that but I think if people from other parts of the country put in their .02 cents there would some type of sweetener in the receipe. Corn bread tastes vary all over the place.

I know. When I make cornbread here I have to make two ..a sweet one for my friend and one the RIGHT!!! way for myself. I always tease her and ask her, "Why don't you just go ahead and cover it with chocolate frosting ... add a few candles and we can pretend it's your birthday." :) She doesn't like my variety, but my hushpuppies are acceptable to her.
A lot of people in other parts of the country don't know cornbread or grits. Or sweetea (Ya'll will notice that IS one word!!!!) :) :)
Best cornbread has jalapenos in it.

Agreed, I think that it is a regional thing. My mother was from the West Virginia and she put a good amount of sugar into her cornbread. I got used to it.
If you ever get to Dallas, visit the Dixie House Restaurant in the Lakewood section of the city. Along with home style cooking (sides include fried okra, red beans and rice, baked squash casserole, etc.) you'll be served fresh rolls and some great jalapeno cornbread.
