Street shooting

I would like to know if model releases are necessary when shooting "candid" photos of people on the street. I see so many street shooting photos on line that are sometimes filled with people whose images are recognizable and I can't image trying to get a release for everyone in the picture. Of course if it's a single person I could see where it would be necessary but I'm not sure.

As has been written before in this forum, there is probably no legal requirement for getting releases from groups of people you see on the street as long as you do not publish the photos, although there may be some people who object to being photographed. If you want to publish a photo, however, best practice requires releases from all who are photographed.

Wrong!

No requirement to have a release of folks on the street. They can expect no privacy.

Excellent, authoritive article. I used to work with an IT law firm and actually had them review this issue. Their conclusion was that with a few exceptions, there is no expectation of privacy in any of the public areas of life--streets, stores, etc. Of course there are public areas where privacy is expected. Prisons, Jails, Toilets, etc. (and sometimes public schools).
