Looking for a 2nd (back-up) camera, but have a dilemma.

I've had a couple postings both here and in the "classifieds" regarding a 2nd camera to my trusty T2i. I have no problems or photo limitations with my T2i. So no intentions of getting rid of it. I've been considering a 2nd camera to avoid lens changing, and as a back-up. And as of this minute have been considering either a SL1 or a EOS-M. I had, and sold the "M", but wished I hadn't and could purchase it back for the same cost as the SL1. I was always very happy with the results of the "M". It's IQ was equal to my T2i. At the time I sold it, I was not happy with the touch screen LCD. I think that's changed now. It's also lighter, and with the adapter, allows for use of all of my Canon lenses. Yet the SL1 is a bit smaller than my T2i, and would also allow for all lenses, AND operates similarly to my familiar T2i.

So I'd like your thoughts on what to do here. But, PLEASE, restrict your comments to ONLY these specific cameras. That'll be tough for a few of you, I know. But try. I really don't need to consider any additional gear right now; as I feel either of these options will best serve my needs.

Thanks

I have a SL1 and love the size, weight, etc... but be warned you T2i may end up being your back-up unit after you start using a SL1.

You might want to consider the T3i and use the T2i as backup. They are still available new at a reasonable price and have several features, such as the pivoting LCD screen, that are improvements over the T2i. A very nice and capable camera.

A good thought. But other than the flip screen LCD, I'm really not sure of any other improvements....much less significant ones. I did the "Dpreview" comparison, and it looks like everything was the same. The good news is that the batteries are the same....and I have several for my T2i. I also have a off-brand (Opteka)battery grip. Wonder is that would work on the T3i, too?

Agreed, I often wish the lcd had the articulating feature too.

Looks like the battery grip for my T2i will also work on a T3i. Unfortunately for the SL1, the batteries are not the same as those for my T2i (and the T3i).

I'm not sure what the improvements were. It's been a while since I've had one. As you already noted though, your batteries and battery grip interchange. Looking at the specs on canon.com, there doesn't appear to be a big difference between the T3i and the SL1. The SL1 has a greater ISO range which probably doesn't mean a thing. I doubt that either one will give good results at high ISO. The T3i lacks autofocus ability while shooting video, if that is a consideration to you. The T3i shows better battery life then the SL1. Not a big price difference between them either. Didn't you mention the EOS-M? I don't see that on Canon's site. I don't think it is in production any longer.

The EOS-M is not made any more. But I'm looking at purchasing USED anyway. Can't recall the last time I bought any NEW gear.

Just a suggestion: contact Canon customer service and ex-

In that case you will probably have better luck finding a used T3i, since they have been in production longer then the SL1.

You do not need to consider any additional gear right now, yet you are considering additional gear?? Sounds like you do indeed have a dilemma!

I know this was not a current option as of this posting, but....it's looking very much like the T3i might be winning out.

Stay with canon or you will have to buy a new set of lenses!

You can get a T1 or T2 very cheap!

I agree wholeheartedly. I absolutely love my SL1, and all your lenses fit either camera. You can't go wrong with the SL1.

I have the EOS M fantastic camera. I like the little guy but have been thinking about selling it. I went in another direction using drones and FPV cameras. I bought the EOS M as a backup for my D5 but sold the D5 last year. The EOS M does great videos also. I never used the SL1 so I can not give an opinion on it but I would recommend the EOS M.
