I'm thinking about buying the Sigma 150mm macro for some close ups of insects and small critters. I also want to use this lens for a medium tele. I know the reviews on this lens have been really good but would really like some input from my hedgehog friends. I have a Nikon D300. Any advice/comments would be greatly appreciated.

While the Sigma is a good lens I would suggest spending the extra money and get The Nikon 200mm F4 macro. You will not be dissapointed.

A very good place to get the low down on lenses is one of two places:

Ken Rockwell for the specs.

Fred Miranda for the user reviews.

From those two sources you can usually get all the info you need to make an informed purchase.

I recently picked up two macro lenses. A Tokina 100 2.8 and a Sigma 180 3.5. Both lenses are very sharp and I could recommend either for macro work. The 180 is very limited though. It is too large and heavy to use as a carry around lens and needs a tripod. The 100 is useful as both a macro and good as a protrait lens.

I concur. I have shot Sigmas and Tamrons, and NEVER have I seen any of these third party lenses compare in quality to the Nikkors. Usually, the overall performance is not even in the ballpark.

The 200mm macro is a good idea, as the extra distance it allows from the subject can often be very important.
