Success has taken longer than expected, but finally caught the texture of an ant's skin and eye without getting buried in specular reflections. The critter crawling on his leg was moving too fast to stack well.
Canon 70D with Canon MP-E 65 macro lens at aperture f/5.6, at 5:1 mag, twin LED panels illumination.
Awesome detail. Very nice work.
Really nice detail. Lighting seems to be one of the greater challenges in stacking. Well done. The bar keeps going up.
Excellent, excellent, excellent!
Nicely done Ron. I'm impressed with the lighting. Constant light sources are not easy to work with. Excellent texture on the exoskeleton.
You have set the bar very HIGH!!! Excellent work.
Don
You appear to be in a league of your own here oldtigger. Does using the LED panels help in getting focused?
Skilled, experienced photographers with a good eye can read transient and flash lighting.
Less skilled ones like myself find the constant illumination much easier to work with.
You can model, accent, contrast and control the light for specific results.
Combining Led lighting with tethering allows me to alter light level, F-stop, resolution and frame step size as i progress through the subject, things i couldn't do if i was dependent on flash strength alone.
To answere your question:
It is always easier to focus if you have nice full constant illumination.
BUT
The LED panels allow me to change the 'perceived' quality of focus by altering the light level versus F-stop during the collection of frames.
For example i can shoot an oblique subject with the face in sharp full res and the tail soft and fuzzy by progressively decreasing the iris opening as i collect frames..(which if you think about it is counter intuitive)
