Canon 7D slow continuous AWB F/9 ISO 320 1/4000 sunny 335mm(500mm equiv). Handheld fast moving object.
The following shots are straight out of the camera RAW converted to jpg in LR5 (reduced in JpegMini) NO adj were made to the pics.
Using Back button focus and AI servo mode, partial metering slow continuous shutter rate.
I am pleased with this first outing. This plane was flying much faster than the average bird, the AI servo focus stayed on with errors only when I let the subject get to far away from center. Was quite impressed with both focus speed and IS of this lens.

You were pushing the lens to the max, and it looks like your settings were just about where they should be. I think you have a keeper. The photographer did a great job!! :D

thank you
I was quite reticent about getting this lens(I am on a very tight budget, but I do not think I will regret it after this session...we'll see. It definitely has its place in with the L's.

This is the friend who did the flying.
Great shots. I've got the Sigma 150-600 C for my Canon 60D. Haven't tried it yet. Were these hand-held or mounted?

All handheld. We shoot a lot of birds and tripods simply won't work for that about half the time. The IS and AI Servo auto-focus is more than up to the job on this lens. Those planes were not slow and it never missed a lick. There is a trick to doing these kinds of shots, but not lens specific.

Nice job! Looks like the lens works very well too. Is this the S or C model? Bob

The 'C' model. Just couldn't justify the double price for the 'S'. Just to get total weather proof and a questionable increase in utilities.

I agree that tripods wouldn't work. I bought a Steady Shot from Cotton Carrier which I plan to use with this lens. You might want to check it out at their Website.

tried one, but for me it was no steadier than good holding form. But I can see where some might benefit from such a thing.

I got the 'C' model for the same reason. I've got something made for putting over a camera and lens to protect it from the weather. Also, a clear plastic bag would probably work just as well.

Very nice shot being handheld. I own the Tamron 150-600 (the Sigma wasn't out yet when I bought it.) and I have been going after birds now and again. My success rate isn't as high as what I would like, but when I do it is great. I can only imagine the speed of the plane compared to a bird, outstanding job!
