I use NIKON NX2 to download from camera, and do some processing in ...Picasa. The NEF files show up in MY PICTURES as an Icon which is a problem when sending pix to Costco. Apparently because they are NEF files. How do I convert the NEF to JPEG?
When you are done processing, in Picasa or any other processing software, you have to save the processed file as a JPG. Simply converting to JPG direct from RAW will not improve the image as any RAW image file needs to be processed in order to have a good image. Simply converting directly will leave you with a flat image.

I use NX 2 and this is the button I use to convert to Jpeg after I am done processing it.
Thanks, but when I use that button I get a reply "You cannot apply this operation to unsupported files. Please re-select files and try again" Since I am download in RAW (NEF) from a Nikon D7100, I don't know what is meant by an unsupported file.

Not sure where you did the processing? Sounds like you used NX2 to download and then uploaded NEFs to Picass for the processing? Is that right? I did not know that Picassa would process RAW. If so and you used Picassa to edit the NEFs, then the Nikon software won't be able to read it after that. You will have to use the Picassa software to covert the files to JPEGs.
Normally in processing RAW files one processes the RAW files using one's own computer and software and the conversion to JPEG is made using that software. THEN the JPEG files are uploaded to sharing sites such as Picassa, Costco, Facebook etc.
I drag and drop and then use Bridge--worked over a million times

Please give more explicit directions Drag and Drop where, and Bridge is foreign to me. A newbie.

He is talking about software tools in Adobe's photo processing software suite.
Are you new to photography? If you have just started shooting why are you shooting in RAW (NEF) format? If you are new to photography it would be a lot easier for you to shoot using JPEG format, for a while at least, until you get familiar with the camera and software and understand the processes better and understand the trades of RAW vs JPEG.
Not new to photography, but don't use Photoshop nor Lightroom, therefore not knowing the "Bridge". Know my Camera very well, althought the D7100 is relatively new, been using D50 and D3200 for years. BUT use Picasa for most processing. Just started using RAW for the first time, therefore the quandry. Finally realized the real problem -- NX2 will not recognize my RAW files from the D7100 (ie. unsupported files). Probably have to download software revisions???

Ok that helps us understand.
Oh it was NX2 that didn't recognize it. Is that Capture NX2 or ViewNX2?
Either way check for software updates as the camera is newer and may not be in the software version on you computer.
However I don't believe that CaptureNX2 is being supported anymore.
One more thing, the replacement for CaptureNX2 is NX-D, unfortunately it doesn't have control points and it never will because Google bought Nix (the authors of CaptureNX) and and the control points went with Nix. But NX-D it is free.
The first version of NX-D was pretty crude, calling it beta-ware was a stretch. However Nikon has been improving it, and Nikon just released an update. I just tried the update and it seems to me like a much improved interface, more intuitive to me, easy to use.
However you still need NX2 as NXD still does not appear to have an import tool.
But NX-D is a viable option for editing and converting NEFs and it's free.

I post process my NEF files and then use the Batch Process of Capture NX2 to convert to JPEGs. I place a folder within the Raw images folder for the JPEGs. I always keep the original Raw images. Then one can drag or copy the JPEGs to any other folder or processing software desired.
