Of course I am prejudice toward the Durango/Pagosa Springs are as that is where I was born (Pagosa Springs) but a little to far for me to travel as now I don't have far to go to find great Aspen color shots (45 mi) The Sierras of CA has good aspen groves along it's 4 major routs 120 in Yosemite, 4 over Ebbits pass, 88 Carson Pass ( my favorite) 89 from Monitor pass to So. Lake Tahoe late Sept to mid Oct.

And following Lake Tahoe's West Shore North around to Tahoe City there are many aspen stands along the way. A hidden gem is CA 89 North of Truckee.

And certainly don't miss Nevada City on CA 49 north of I-80 where the migrants brought some of their favorite eastern Native trees that provide, for us, an exotic show in the Fall. Stop by the Nevada City Winery for excellent tastings and wines.

Kebler Pass between Crested Butte and Paonia in central Colorado goes through the middle of one of the largest aspen forests in the US. The last couple of weeks of September through the first week or two of October are the best, depending upon weather conditions.

Rocky Mountain National Park on both the East and West sides can provide spectacular images as well. In addition to aspen you have elk, moose, pika, deer, big horn sheep, wild turkeys and a lot of mountain vistas to set your shutter finger aquiver.

There is also Independence Pass between Leadville and Aspen, Colorado.

As a native of Northern Wyoming all areas from the Grand Tetons to wet and the Big Horn Mountains near Sheridan offer outstanding opportunities as well, and traditionally the Aspen will change here earlier than in Colorado so it is possible to hit both on an extended road trip.

Yep - The Nevada City to Truckee is a great drive, then 89 north to 49 and back through Downyville, North San Jaun (take the "Back Road" Foot - Tyler ??? ) to Nevada City Some great 1 day loops but far better if you have 2 or 3 days to really see the Nevada, Elderado, Placer & Alpine county areas of the Sierras any time of the year - "BUT" fall is by far better.

I invite input from any and all of you who travel to photograph. Where can
I find some of the places I have seen some of the most beautiful photos
of Aspen trees at the peak of color? I would like to combine this trip in
with one of the national parks. I have heard that Colorado has the best
views. I have been to RMNP in the summer, saw Aspen trees, hard to judge
then. Glacier NP? never been. I am open for your travel experiences.

Flexibly, mobility, scouting, and the forest service are the real keys to getting aspen photographs. Being in Colorado and knowing that just about anywhere in the mountain areas there are aspen helps make it easy to get shots. Time flexibility is needed since every year the aspen usually start changing a different time every year. You will need mobility since each general area of the location mentioned by others differ in start year to year. If you come out just before or as they start turning, you can scout the many areas for what you want to have in the foreground and background. And having the various forest service numbers can allow you to call and see what areas across the state are like before you go across the state - and then find out where you just left was the best spot! I know that other states have good aspen viewing too. But once the aspen start turning in Colorado, it is usually three to six weeks of great aspen viewing.

Also, the aspen is the largest organism on earth. A scientist studying the aspen "trees" in the Flat Top forest area of Colorado discovered that most of the many square miles of "trees" he was studying was just one very large tree.

hi ted, I took the train from central Illinois to san Francisco last October, the views were beautiful. I don't know what you want to see but seeing the rockies by train was really fun. you see things that you don't see on the high way. don't know what you are thinking, driving out to Colorado? just an idea. you could go to Denver and rent a car. just an idea. deb
