Program/Manual Canon T2i

Just got this Canon T2i a few days ago so I took it with me when I took my recently rescued Cairn Terrier for a walk.

1st pic the Camera was set on Program setting.

2nd pic I put the Camera on M (Manual) and closed the
aperture a few steps down (smaller) to let less light in.
This pic represents what my eye was really seeing.

First question: when you adjusted your Aperture did you in turn adjust your shutter speed or ISO?

second: what type of metering mode are you using? evaluative mode? spot mode? Partial?

Program mode, I believe, adjusts it exposure settings for the whole setting, so it's taking a reading from the whole scene and adjusting to get the most light everywhere.

Automatic will often be fooled by a mixture of light and dark - tends to average depending on your metering system, but as you know and have shown not always an ideal method.

I pressed and held the the Apeture Button while turning the dial. The changes the LENS OPENING... When you not holding that button in then the dial changes the shutter speed.

Way back in 1968 I learned on a fully Manual Pentax Spotmatic and I like setting things. Program mode is good when something fast is happening around you and you do not have time to set things. My second camera was a Canon FT and that was a Manual also. I was trying to find a digital camera that was nothing but MANUAL but they don't make them.

As you wrote automatic is nice & maybe needed for those shoot from the hips shots. I'm guessing cameras without automatic were never mass produced because there were few that requested them so they cost way too much to make. Kinda of like low salt peanut butter - take some salt out, but up the price because less is made.

I also have the same camera and in auto you can still set the metering to spot, partial, eveluative or center-weighted average.
I found that when working with different lighting I use spot and take several readings from high to low and then adjust settings to what I am looking to achieve in the pic. The next time you go out and shoot, try changing the meter in auto and take a pic on each setting so you have a pic of each mode.
