Just wondering

As I will be buying a new camera soon I came across this thought.

Why couldn't you buy the new Canon 5Ds and purposely use a wider lens knowing you would crop in during PP giving up 50% of your resolution. Your starting with 50MB of resolution .......

At 20' a 50mm at f/4 has a DOF of 4 feet behind the focus point whereas a 100mm at f/4 will only have a DOF of about 1 foot behind the focus point.

Plus your shutter speed can be lower without having blur problems.

I'm thinking in low light situations like Missions where having spot on focus is more important than Bokah.

It does make sense, just remember a couple of things.
1. DX lenses are "generally" not as high quality as an FX lens. Usually, we are told (I can't say this for certain), that with the higher grade sensors, the quality of the glass makes even more difference.

2. Most lenses, DX and FX experience some softening on the outside edges, so you would have to work with that, when doing composition. There may be some vignetting as well. I think if you work with it, you can actually use it artistically.

Sounds like it should produce some good results, you will be using the sharpest part of the image, from the middle and that 50MP sensor should produce images that stand up to cropping very well.

Hope you plan on buying an interest in a HD factory for storage of those images.

The 5Ds is the new 50MP full frame Canon. It will only use full frame Canon EF lenses, you would have to force a crop sensor EF-S lens on it resulting in damage to camera and lens.

He is talking about using wider, faster lenses in low light circumstances and then cropping out the center to get the perspective his longer, slower lenses get him in better lite locations. A 50% crop will still result in a 25MP image for prints.

You got it Robert :)

A more expensive camera for sure but your lenses would be way less, no need for a 70-200L F/2.8 IS

You use a prime for wedding service, a 85mm F/1.8 gives a great picture for $300. You shoot at 2.8 - 4.0 but as your only at 85mm your in-focus DOF is far great then you would be at 200mm at the same F stop. You then simply crop in during PP. You can also use without cropping for a wider look of the same picture.

The only disadvantage is you wouldn't have the same compression at a 200mm, that is for the shots you want it. But then again is a very low light situation getting good exposure trumps the artistic look of a shallow DOF, well at least in my book. Again I'm only thinking of the is style when your in a real light setting and you want to increase your percentage of keepers.
