I have an 18-200 lens as my all day, every day lens. It's great. But, I'm thinking I want to move to a 300. Should I go 18, 50, 70? etc., etc. ( it would be for 'special' occasions.) Thanks for any advice.

If it were me, I would keep the 18-200 and add a 300mm prime lens. Perhaps a 1.4X teleconverter as well.

Try to find the last Nikon 300mm f4, not the current one.

You mean the current one isn't the last one?

I forgot to say I have a Nikon d7000 - dx, I am definitely keeping the 18-200 for everyday use.

Definitely look into the 300mm f/4. I have the 300 AF-s (without the VR) and it is a great lens, fast, sharp, great contrast, but it is fairly large and heavy. It also works great with my 1.7 tc.

Thom Hogan says this is the sharpest of all the previous 300mm f4's.

Hi Barbara. What will you be shooting at 300? And what is your budget for a new/ used lens? There are a lot of options out there for lenses. Let us know what you want to shoot.

The new Nikon 300mm f/4 lens has the Phase Fresnel element that allows them to make the lens much smaller and lighter than the previous one. It's the first Nikon lens to use that design. Nikon may come out with a redesigned 24-70mm f/2.8 lens with VR and the phase fresnel element. I would definitely check it out.
