Is this yet another situation then, where big business is allowed to ride over 'common sense', like Big Tobacco has done for so long?

Australia is being sued by Phillip Morris:

http://www.ag.gov.au/tobaccoplainpackaging

"Philip Morris Asia is challenging the tobacco plain packaging legislation under the 1993 Agreement between the Government of Australia and the Government of Hong Kong for the Promotion and Protection of Investments (Hong Kong Agreement). This is the first investor-state dispute that has been brought against Australia.

Philip Morris Asia is arguing that Australia's tobacco plain packaging measure constitutes an expropriation of its Australian investments in breach of Article 6 of the Hong Kong Agreement. Philip Morris Asia further argues that Australia's tobacco plain packaging measure is in breach of its commitment under Article 2(2) of the Hong Kong Agreement to accord fair and equitable treatment to Philip Morris Asia's investments. Philip Morris Asia further asserts that tobacco plain packaging constitutes an unreasonable and discriminatory measure and that Philip Morris Asia's investments have been deprived of full protection and security in breach of Article 2(2) of the Hong Kong Agreement. Australia rejects these claims."
My Comment:
I wonder if Monsanto will be in a similar position to try and sue governments who ban or restrict use of it's products such as Round Up under international agreements?

Why not ask any veteran who served in either Viet Nam or Thailand about 2-4-D, half of the "Agent Orange" and other herbicide concoctions about how safe it was..... and how many years did it take the VA to accept this fact.

There are veterans who served in Thailand still struggling to get their claims adjudicated with the VA, as they require you prove direct exposure to herbicides not just presumptive exposure for those who were in Viet Nam.

Beware of the GMO's that are being developed today. "Big Business" is claiming they are safe, just like they said years ago about Agent Orange. See this link: http://www.nal.usda.gov/exhibits/speccoll/items/show/1417

Hi Nakkh,
And I'm sure the problem and impact of this poison goes on into the entire global ecosystem as well and may well prove to be cumulative. Much is made of the claim that it will break down, but does it and what does it break down into?

Who knows what pervasive low level long term exposure does to animal life (including humans) It can't be beneficial.

This is well known. The label on Roundup and other glyphosate products prohibits its use within 100 ft of a wetland or water body. It is a federal offense to use any pesticide in a manner inconsistent with its label.

Hi Jasi,
I have downloaded and read the link to the pdf you provided above.
It is terrifying that such blatant lies and misinformation were told by the American Government at the time. For example, the USSR uses it so it must be OK! What kind of justification was that! The language used then does not seem much different to that used by current big business to protect their business interests today.
Please Google the following and click to 'Images'. This is truly awful:
Deformed fetuses as a result of Agent Orange in Vietnam.
