Anyone have any comments, experience etc. regarding the Tamron 28-300 MM F3.5 - 6.3 DI VC PZD?

Never have been a proponent of one lens doing everything but
"one never knows"

Traveling to Europe in Sept and do not want to "lug" my Canon gear (24-70 and 70-200 5D Mark 3)
Weight
Theft

Can this lens "really do the job?
Clear tack sharp images across the range of the lens

Or...for a few hundred more, purchase the Panasonic FZ1000
(1 inch sensor) and be done with it

Thanks for any feedback

Pete

You're use to the Canon - stick with it..........

I am becomming a great fan of Tamron lenses... I have one now - the 90/210 aand it is excellant.. My next Tamron will be the 16 or 28/300...
I would suggest you google the reviews of those lens and read what the buyers or reviewers have to say...

It's not going to be as sharp as the two you have. It's a fairly popular lens so many find it sharp enough. The only way to know for sure is to try it. The same can be said for the FZ1000.

My wife has that lens on her Sony A700. She's not terribly impressed by its sharpness. And it seems to fail miserably in "lower" light situations, even outdoors. Inside buildings it's practically useless. From her reports I'd say stay away from this lens.

I love the Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM Lens. The downside is that it's quite large and expensive. The shots are great though and for me that's what is more important. They run from around $2000 for a refurbished unit from Canon to around $2450 from B&H new.

I own the Tamron 18-270, and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I loaned it to friend to shoot a wedding and the images turned out great. Since it is a little older lens, (2 years) the price should be very reasonable. I shoot it on my Canon T3i and have had very good success with it. Good Luck!!!

I agree. My wife uses the Tamron 18-270 on her Nikon D90 or D50 and gets excellent results every time. It is the only lens she carries on a photo shoot and loves it.

In general, large scope telephoto lens do not perform that well at the extremes of the focal lengths.

I might suggest renting if you are unsure. One persons sharp, is another persons soft.

The specific lens you mention is quite good actually, but beware of the earlier non-PZD model of this lens, it was pretty bad.
Image quality of the PZD model is very comparable to the Canon version, and its weather-sealed as well.

Take a look at the Sigma 18-300. I researched both and am glad that I bought the Sigma. IQ is great and it is a compact lens so easy to transport. If you're into Macro, Sigma has an adapter that fits the lens so you can get as close as 6 inches from the subject. Pricewise I think both the Sig and the Tammy are fairly close. Enjoy your trip and don't leave anything in your car. I had a lot of equipment stolen at a rest stop on the Autopista in Italy. They smashed in the window of the rental car which was a major hassle. Worst part of it was I lost two weeks of shot film from earlier in the trip that I could never replace. Obviously this was in the days before digital.

Thanks for the heads up. Purchased the 28-300 from KEH (used) If not too good, can always sell it back to them.....

The lens is a compromise at best. Better at the short end. The FZ1000 is more convenient, but not better than the other combination.
