I spent part of the day Saturday at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in upstate New York where they have some Martin "Condos" and some Blue Bird boxes that have been taken over by Tree Swallows. the comings and goings gave me a chance to play a little with these smaller birds in flight. Canon 100-400mm lens. Canon 7D MkII manual exposure, AI-Servo AF, 65 AF points with the center point as the initiating one. Case 5 or 6, I'm not sure.

Martins, like all Swallows hawk insects out of the air. I was extremely lucky to get this one of a Martin about to capture a bug. A bit too much of a crop, though.

Awesome! One never sees good small bird captures like this, so this is a real treat.
All good, but #5 is the best in my opinion. Well done.
Super series! I tried swallows in flight once. Gave up too quickly. Your effort was worthwhile. I also really like #5.
Nice set... Impressive capture with the bug!

Great work. I know from experience how difficult it is to get those tree swallows. Never had the chance with a purple martin, but I'm guessing that it's not any easier.
Thanks for sharing.
It's tough to freeze these guys in action. You've done very well!
I think I will give the swallows and martins another chance. They have not managed to put themselves in focus or all the way in the frame when I press the shutter. I am glad I am not shooting film.
These guys are tough to capture & you've done a most commendable job. I'm really partial to the 3rd shot where it's honing in on the insect.
