More of the image in focus?

Does this make sense:
Focusing further away from the subject at the same f-stop will give more detail than being at the minimum focusing range???
I am trying to figure out why my insect images have such a small area in focus compared to others.

Your observation is correct: the closer the lens is to subject, the less Depth of Field is apparent, for any selected aperture.

Quite often, I will shoot a bit farther back from subject, just to gain a bit more DoF, then crop to increase subject size for final image.

Ah. I misunderstood your question. I didn't understand that you were asking about changing your working distance.

Sorry LoneRangeFinder for not being clearer. I sometimes have a difficult expressing myself in print.

Do not worry about it. Allen has a hard time keeping up with most conversations.

Don't forget to keep your lens as Flat as possible/on the same focal plane/ as the subject. The flatter to the subject the more is in focus. Some of these guys/macro nuts/have this in mine for every single shot.
