Ant or Wasp ?

Bug Guide ID pending.... Not sure if it's an ant. It could be a wingless Wasp like the "Cow Killer" or "Velvet Ant"...From my searching, I'd say it's a Timulla vagans - ... Which is a female wingless Wasp, similar to the "Velvet ants"

Yeah, it is, but there must be other species as I have older images of much larger females with slightly different coloration. http://www.flickr.com/photos/screaminscott/842610682/in/album-72157636298928214

they are all the same critter and all female.the males have wings.i have seen 5 or 6 different ones here.

I see the one I linked to more often. This is only like the 2nd time I've seen the one I posted at the start of this thread & it's about half the size of the one on my Flickr stream. Neither one stays put for long though.

i know,they are really hard to shoot because they dont stop moving
