Spent some time with my little fellow this morning. Smallest Phidippus I've worked with to date. Close to 6 or 7mm. Most of the Phidippus I photograph are 12 to 14mm and larger. Small crickets are larger than this jumper. I'm amazed at all of the color and hair on this guy. With the naked eye, he looks like a plain black-bodied jumper with a few dots and stripes of white on his back. Under the lens it's a different story.

Look close in the jumpers eyes

that second one is a nice setting.
I was so proud of myself for finding a 3mm one on my trash can lid.
What do you feed them down there? Monsanto might be interested.

Very cool. I love the flowers reflected in the eyes. The size is interesting-- I've not yet seen one larger than 6-7 mm. I believe they may have been larger in Oklahoma where I grew up-- I just never looked that close back then.

I've seen 3, maybe 4 species, here in Oregon. I have two repeaters that have appeared on the side of my house. It often dips into the mid 50's at night-- even during the summer-- so I'm not sure that's conducive to larger jumpers.

Thanks Allen. Oregon has the Phidippus audax, one of the largest in the country. Next time your on a road trip, stop and check out the road side yellow reflector signs. They often build nest between the reflector and the post. At the height of summer you should find them pretty easy. Although the males are black, the females can cover a wide range of colors. In the 14 to 18mm size..

Thanks for the locating tip. This might be the jumpers I remember seeing as a boy. They were very quick and often on the side of our house near the gutter downspouts.

They will nest and hang out around man made structures as well. Wooden fences is another good spot for them.
