That's the same focal length that I use. Check out the threads on UHH Macro. Eventually you are going to want to go off auto. There are same "base-line" settings that many of us use when supplementing with diffused flash. My starting point, on manual, is f/16 @ 1/200 & ISO 100. Some variation will be necessary contingent on how much ambient lighting you want to include.

I use the twin macro flash units with some added diffusion. Canon makes a kit that is used by several on this forum. Most, however, use a single flash with a 6"x8" diffusion softbox.

You have found some nice subjects to shoot. There is a lot for us beginners to learn and this is a great place for us to get advice and encouragement. I am learning a lot from the experts here as you are doing.

We all started by using available light, then camera pop-up flash for macro exposure. You can learn most of the basic techniques this way, but you will soon learn the drawbacks of narrow Depth of Field. Your image #5 is a good example.
Exif image #5:
Camera Model: Canon EOS REBEL T3i
Lens: EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
Image Date: 2015-05-24
Focal Length: 100mm
Aperture: ƒ/4.0
Exposure Time: 0.017 s (1/60-sec)
ISO equiv: 400
Exposure Bias: none
Metering Mode: Matrix
Exposure: program (Auto)
White Balance: Auto
Flash Fired: Yes

Most of us rely on standard speedlight or ringflash illumination, so we can routinely shoot at ISO 200, 1/200-sec at f/16.

Thanks for the input. Do you recommend speedlight or ringflash?

It is personal preference, like Coke or Pepsi. Do you currently own a standard speedlight? Which model?

Eventually, you will want to obtain a speedlight for macro-photography, compatible with your Canon Rebel T3i.
