Subject camera is a Nikon D5300. Maybe I'm making a mistake somewhere, but when I delete images from the SD card in the cameral, then when I resume shooting, the camera uses the same file name/number again. Therefore, if I download the images onto my laptop and then clear the SD card, the next set of images will carry the same file names and numbers and overwrite what I had previously saved on my laptop. It's complicating my file management on my laptop. Please help if I'm doing something incorrectly.

Go to Custom Menu d4) File Number Sequence Set it to On, if set to off every time you delete the files it will restart the number sequence.

Also remember that this will revert to DSC0001 when you get to DSC9999.
I can't find "custom menu" option via the menu on the camera. Is D4 something available on the D5300?
Thank you,
Dave

Jethro,
Thank you for being so patient with a newbie. I went to this menu setting, changed it to on, deleted an image (#406) and then took another shot and it was numbered DSC-0001. Now I already had an image on this chip with the same number so I panicked and looked and the original DSC-0001 was still there. So, if I copy this set of images onto my laptop again, will I have two number "1"s? All I wanted to do was to not reuse the number of a deleted image so that when I download the files, each one will have a unique number regardless of whether I delete it frm the SD card or not. Thanks in advance.

What now happens is when you take the card out of the camera and upload the files on your computer it will continue from what ever number was the last picture you took. It will continue to go up in number till it hits 999 on that camera. Instead of the picture after 999 being 1,000 it will start over again at 001. When you load on your computer the file number will be whatever the number is. The date the pictures were took will be added to the file name of whatever program you download your pictures to.
If you restarted at DSC_0001 you will go to DSC_9,999 before it resets to DSC_0001

In some cases on the Mac, a panel about duplicate names appears that offers to overwrite or keep both. The latter will keep the same file names but one will have copy appended. Don't know about Windows OS on PCs.

I think this depends on the program used to download the images.

Not necessarily. If you have a folder for pictures and it resides on the internal hard drive and if you have a, say, SSD card accessed through USB and select all files by, say, command-A and then drag to that picture folder the Mac OS will report duplicate file named, if any, and will offer to replace or keep and will add copy to each duplicate. Old versions of OS X didn't do this but more modern versions do. All of this selection, drag and drop, and messaging takes place within the OS and independent of any application. There is also a second way from within some image viewing app - do Save As and add copy to the file name after choosing where to save - the steps after the Save As are not governed by the app, tho.

I do not drag & drop. I insert card into reader. Pick either Lightroom, Nikon Transfer 2, or PSE 11 and use the program to download. I seldom let the files import without naming and having them numbered by shoot description.
