Will I live to see 80? Good question??‏

I recently picked a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive Lab tests, he said I was doing fairly well for my age. (I am almost Seventy Five).

A little concerned about that comment, I couldn't resist asking 'Do you think I'll live to be 80?'

He asked, 'Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer, wine or hard liquor?'

'Oh no,' I replied. 'I'm not doing drugs, either!'

Then he asked, 'Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?'

'I said, 'Not much... My former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!'

'Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?'

'No, I don't,' I said.

He asked, 'Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?'

'No,' I said...

He looked at me and said, 'Then, why do you even give a shit?

Really! I recently had an 84-year old patient who really wasn't very overweight advise me that she was going on a strict diet. I advised her that when and if I am 84 I am going to eat whatever the hell I want! The family of an elderly gentleman expressed concern about his having a small glass of brandy every evening. "Is he getting drunk and falling down?" I asked. Is he being a problem? No, they advised, they just didn't know if it was good for him. My advice was that I was NOT about to suggest to a relatively healthy 93-year old that he change his lifestyle at this point!

Life needs to be worth living. All things in moderation - rib eye steak is GOOD for you - just not too much! Sun is good for you - just not too much! Wine is good for you - just not too much! Fun is good for you - is there such a thing as too much?

I agree with all of you. After reading these I am now fixing myself some steak and eggs and then going to the golf course. I’m 71.

Just go for a walk afterwards. Even if you were worried about your cholesterol, it is now acknowledged (what studies have shown for fifty years! ) that eating eggs does not raise your cholesterol - eating saturated fats does to some extent - so it is the bacon and sausage, not the eggs, that you need to just consume in moderation.

Look, I am 87 going 88, I love food and can cook. We go a lot on cruises and I am a little overweight, but not much more than when I was 75. The secret is moderation in all things. I have problems, but 25 pills a day keeps me going but 15 of those pills are massive pain killers because they could not get my knee replacement right the second time around. I was one of those unfortunates who fell into the 10 % bracket. Always a bit of slack for the medical fraternity. Add a pacemaker and a few other things but I am a glass half full man and very positive. That too is important. So age really is in the mind. I still look at a group of oldies and say "look at those old guys", much to the amusement of my wife. I still play golf 18 holes ... in a buggy, club level duplicate bridge & am a keen photographer with a Nikon D800 (weighs a ton), but a good strap helps. So enjoy life it is too precious to worry about it.

I will be 80 in two months, and do most all of those things - except smoke and drink, gave those up a while ago, not too into hiking, bicycling, golf, or bowling. Prefer my telescope and astronomy, and chasing women, except that they are all too fast for me any more. Darn.
