Did a series last year on flash bulbs I found in a house I was restoring

Simon, I used to buy flashbulbs by the case during the 1950s. Almost all my advertising illustrations required multiple lighting arrangements, often with mixed sizes (#2 were the big boys, then #22, then #5, and finally the "peanut" size). We'd diffuse the intensity with one or two thicknesses of a hankerchief in front of the reflector. The power source was three or four D-cells in the flashgun, so we didn't have to look for an AC plug anywhere.

How times have changed Richard, far more convenient nowadays

Just think how many flashbulbs you must have used back then

Yes and no, Simon. You must realize that most times, I made only two exposures for each illustration, or 24 to 30 for an entire assignment. I carried enough #5 flashbulbs for two or three assignments in one compartment of my 4x5-inch monorail view camera's case, plus 15 double-sided film holders, three lenses (one on the camera, two in plastic boxes), the flashgun with reflector, extension cords, etc., etc. When I ran out of flashbulbs, I could buy a couple of 12-pack sleeves at any drugstore. In those days, we carried our stuff right into the airliner and stuffed it all into large baggage racks at the front of the cabin, instead of wrestling with overhead bins. And there wasn't a hint of security checks or wands or taking off your shoes -- we walked from the ticket counter direct to the plane, climbed the staircase and boarded. Talk about convenience!

I see what you mean Richard, back in the days when people could be trusted not like nowadays when a small minority ruin everything for the majority of us. You sure wouldn't get far with all that kit trying to board today.
Fascinating story thanks so much Richard
