Can't mount SD card into Samsung Galaxy S5

Can anyone advise me how to mount an SD card in my S5? I have a 32 gig micro SD in the slot but the field on my phone that says "mount SD card" is greyed out. I have contacted AT&T and Samsung. Neither can help me. Why have an expansion slot if it won't let me mount the card???

Did you put the card in with the phone turned off? Is the cars inserted correctly? In my S3, the card slot is spring loaded. Push in and release
to remove, push in to insert. It should be done with the phone off.

Did that. Tried it off. Removed it. Tried it on. Removed it. Still greyed out. Gonna do it again. (I'm thinking I may go ahead & upgrade to the S6...)

I have 4.4.2 (Kitkat) on my S3 and my SD card works.

Do you have any other device you can test the card in? Since you said SD card in Samsung S5 I am assuming you actually mean Micro-SD.

It is quite possible that the micro-SD simply needs to be formatted. In my Samsung Note 3 I can format the SD card by going to Settings / General / Storage and at the bottom of that screen I find a "Format SD card" function.

I believe they do need to be formatted before they can be mounted.
