Rather than give advice, let me share some things that work for me. Keep your aperture set to blur your background as much as possible unless there's a good reason to include it. I carry a mono-pod when I shoot flowers because I always try to shoot with the lowest ISO I can & sometimes this can mean slower shutter speeds. The exception is windy days. (friends make great wind blocks) I try different white balance settings to get true color. Lastly, flowers are like insect macros.... they are interesting in their own rite but really need something extra to make the shot special.... A child's hands holding a rose or some additional element can change a technically excellent photo of a rose into something truly special.
beautiful picture of the rose. only improvement I might make would be to clone out the red pot.
I love taking pictures of my flowers! I prefer not centering them or getting a little sky - that provides a little interest.Mine are Mr. Lincoln - large rich color;)
