This small bird has some markings like a sparrow; however, I'm unable to find in my bird book. Your help identifying the bird or improving the picture would be appreciated.

Purple Finch. Although they appear a lot more red than purple.

Thanks a bunch, both in photo suggestions and bird identification. I'm now smarter than when I got up this morning.

You are undoubtedly right about having lots of them as they are quite common, but it ain't a Redheaded Sparrow. Get out a bird book Mike, there is no such thing as a Redheaded Sparrow. The only other species it could be are Cassin's Finch or House Finch but both of those are west of the Rocky Mtns. so that probably leaves them out too.

This picture is from Fliker, hardly an authoritative source, anyone can post anything they want on there and call it what ever they want. That bird is a House Finch! I was wrong about the range of the House Finch though, they are found east of the Rockies so that maybe what the OP's bird is. BUT, I will still stand by my statement that there is no such thing as a Redheaded Sparrow.

Purple finch is a different bird than the house finch. I believe this is a house finch. Their range is spreading. See this link.

And this one for a page on tricky id of house and purple finches.

Yes it is a House Finch. Have a pair nest on my back porch every year. Fun to watch the young when they fledge.

I went to google, typed in 'redheaded sparrow' and clicked on Images and got both of these birds as well as a dozen other different looking birds.
I posted a picture one time and mistakenly identified it. Later I went to Google to look for a picture of the correct identification and guess what? There was my picture! So, anything you identify as something right or wrong will appear in google under that name.

Found under Redheaded Sparrow
