How do you all feel about smart phones vs feature phones like a flip phone? Worth the money and plan cost with big or little companies. I would be buying one or two phones unlocked. Thanks for all info and opinions. They will help me study the issue.

Is a smart phone worth the money or is life just as good with a common cell phone?

Smartphones can do so much more than the old flip phone and the rates for smartphones have come way, way down. I have a smartphone and only pay $35 a month for unlimited talk including long distance, unlimited text, and 2.5 Gigs of 4G data. Almost silly to have an old flip phone unless you are really strapped for cash and they gave you one of those free Obama phones.

Yes, smartphones are worth the money compared to a flip phone. I personally enjoy having access to almost unlimited information. I enjoy many of the apps that are available. Any more questions?

I think smart phones are definitely worth it for some people. I wouldn't be without mine.

However, they can be daunting. I ordered one recently for an older relative and it didn't work out.

Are you some sort of zealot that has to turn EVERY discussion into something about the president?

It really depends on whether or not you would use some or many of the features and "Apps" (applications) of the smartphone. I had an iPhone when I moved to rural Maine and could not get AT&T service, so sold it back and just got a Tracfone, since I don't spend so much time talking on the phone - no monthly fee and pretty cheap, and it works off of most cell towers. For people who only want a phone and don't gab for hours, that is the best deal going. Once AT&T finally put in some cell towers, I returned to using an iPhone. Apps that I find useful, and everyone has their favorites, include the maps - you can not only see where YOU are located, but you can look things up on the map and not only find directions but pull up their phone number, reviews, and even their website, so you can not only find the nearest Chinese restaurant but look at their menu! I like the Weather Channel App, which not only lets me look at the forecast but see the weather radar for the area. I can check my bank account balance and deposit checks by taking their photo. I can read medical articles and get continuing education credit for doing so through a paid App. I can look up medications. Some electronic medical records systems which I have used in the past allowed me to access a patient's chart directly from my iPhone, so if I got a call from a patient or about a patient (from the ER) I could look at their record wherever I was. I check in for airline flights and download the boarding pass, and they scan the barcode directly from the phone at the airport. It has an alarm clock which I use when on the road. AND - it holds a very large selection of music, which I can play through "Bluetooth" devices, including a little speaker on my desk or through the car radio. Most of the newer cars can come with Bluetooth-enabled radios, which not only allows you to play your music (with no wires) but also allows you to link your phone to the car radio (which has a built-in mike) so that when you drive, you can call someone using voice commands or answer the phone with a button on the steering wheel. It is pretty neat. Some people play games or read books on their smartphones, but I find the screen uncomfortably small for those purposes.

We have flip phones, an Ipad, and MacBook Pros. No smartphones for us and we have access to any information we need, when we need it.

We have flip phones from Verizon and an Apple Ipad that we purchased. We also own MacBook Pros that are paid for. Any information we need, we can get off the internet, when we travel after finding a hotspot or going to the local library. We don't skip a beat or think we are missing anything by not having a smartphone.

It's definitely worth the money unless one is strapped for cash. If that's the case, then one can certainly live without a smartphone.
