Can you use an extension tube on a Nikkor 200mm lens?

I thought I read somewhere that Nikon does not recommend an extension tube for the Nikkor 200mm lens. Is this true?
If so, how do I get beyond 1:1 ratio with the Nikkor 200?

since an extension tube has no optics/obstructions it seems they could be used with any nikon lens made.
Perhaps what you saw referred to tele-extenders?

There is nothing unusual about a Nikkor 200-mm macro lens. With extension tubes, it will function the same as any other macro lens with tubes. I have used auto-extension tubes on a Nikkor 105-mm macro, and Bill Hudson has used tubes on his Nikon-mount Tamron 180-mm macro. You will hurt nothing by trying. I strongly recommend auto-extension tubes, so you preserve the auto-aperture feature of your lens.

I might add that you need to make sure the tubes have metal mounts on both ends like the Kenko tubes. The cheap ones will cause your lens to drop off. On this at least, I know of what I speak.

You will have to mind the weight of the lens hanging on the tubes. Keep it supported at all times. Hanging straight down isn't as critical but, causes stress on all those sections.

I have successfully used at least 100mm of extension when using the 200mm micro. Only adverse effect is vignetting on my 800e but otherwise they work quite well. One thing to note is the 200 is a lil on the heavy side so take heed if using cheap extensions personally I use two old PN-11s which gives me a bit over 100mm of extension. The reason for using these relics is that they are substantially made and i have not once been worried about flexure or breakage. Sadly they offer no thru the lens signal.
