Question on after effect on manipulated images

I notice that sometimes when I Photoshop an image, save it, when I get out of Photoshop and bring the image back onto the monitor, it is lighter than the final image that I had in Photoshop. (In fact the image will come up on the screen, THEN get lighter.)
Can anyone explain and tell me how NOT to have this happen please? Thanks.
