Something to replace the editing/raw conversion capabilities of lightroom? I do not care about nor do I want an "organizer". The software must run on both Windows and Mac.

TIA

Nikon View NX/2 is free from their website and does the basics pretty easily.

For a Canon shooter Digital Photo Professional comes with the camera or can be downloaded from their website.

Well, I know of a number of raw converters/editors but have no experience with any except NX2 and DPP and of course Lightroom and Photoshop and they are limited to Nikon and Canon cameras.

I'm looking for words of experience.

Photoshop has gone away except for the CC verion and I have no interest in cloud-based programs.

Why? Well it seems that after upgrading to LR6 I can not load copies on both my Win machine and Mac under the same license (I spent more than an hour on the phone with Adobe and they were unable to help). In addition, LR 6 is slow as mud.

So, enough of Adobe.

You might check out Raw Therapee for a converter. It's pretty good and the price is right (free). It also runs on everything (Windows, Mac, and Linux). But you will probably need another program for final editing. Finding something without a file manager is not easy especially for Mac and/or Linux. Some programs like Lightroom or Aftershot Pro2 more or less force you to use their file manager. I don't like that either. I don't use Lightroom for that reason. I don't want to deal with import/export and a cataloging system. I have my own filing system and have all my photos on an external hard drive that I can plug into both my Windows and Linux machines. The files are available to all programs on either Windows or Linux. So you could run several different programs on Windows and others on Mac and still easily access all your files. Just a suggestion. Have a GREAT DAY!

The Nikon free software works on photos taken by my Nikon and my old Canon. Try it out on another camera's photos
