Hawaii, D5300, 18-55 or 18-140

I have Nikon D5300. I took Hoggers' advice and took the 18-140 and an f1.8 35mm. Hardly used the 35mm and used the 18-140 about 99% of the time. Since then, I find that the 18-140 is a go to lens. I have 4 others (18-55 (light indoor lens), 35 F1.8, 50 f 1.8 and 55-300 (for reach)). I find that the kit lens, 18-140 is on my body almost 90% of the time. Seems to be the best combination most always. At my grand daughter's wedding yesterday, it did the job. I noticed the professional also used a zoom 100% of the time. Didn't ask as I didn't want to disturb her work.

Bought the 18-140 last week to replace my well used 18-105. (Still have it on my D90 though)
It's brilliant...unless you are planning distance shots, the 18-140 is all you'll need...did the photography up at our hillclimb track on Sunday (motorsport) and did the lot with it...never even bothered to take my long lenses...It's great across the whole focal range...

Had my 7100 for 18 months...best camera I ever had...the 18-140 really compliments it...I gave my wife a different make camera to prevent theft...

I would say that you have a problem with that lens. Did you notice how it makes it look like all the steering wheels are on the wrong side? Nice shots, but I think the lens needs calibration! :-D

I, too, have the D5300 and it came with the 18-140mm "Kit" lens. When I was researching the camera, that seemed to be THE lens that was matched to it. It is a Great lens. I also priced the two separately and I believe the 18-140mm was going for over $500. At that price I wouldn't exactly put it the "Kit" category.
I needed something with more reach than that or my 200mm so I bought the Sigma 18-300mm, and I haven't used the 18-140mm since.
Now, if I were going to Hawaii and had to choose 2 lenses it would be the 18-140 & the 55-300mm. If I were picking just one it would have to be the 55-300mm for versatility.
As a caveat, I was never really happy with the 55-300. Never really got sharp images.
Anyhow, I would choose both the 18-140 and the 55-300 to have all my bases covered, and have the 18-140 on as the goto.
