How long for Nikon lens repairs?

Any rules of thumb for how long it takes to get a lens checked out and possibly repaired by Nikon? I checked their website and it says only Nikon factory repair possible - no local dealer.

I'm in the midwest so shipping might also take time if it has to go to a coast.

I'd plan on two weeks plus shipping time. Or you could phone the repair place.

I've sent a few in over the last few years for either repair or CLA, and it's usually two weeks at the Long Island facility--that's for a non-pro account. When we send the ones from work, Pro Account, we usually get them back within four to five days.

I strongly suggest that you contact UHH member, Camera Repair Technician Rick Riggins in Denver Colorado: http://www.discountcamerarepair.com He has many satisfied clients, including me.

I brought a digital SLR in last Thursday and was told it would take 7 to 10 days to tell me what is wrong with it. I would guess another week or so to make the repair. You would have to figure close to one week in the mail each way, so I feel you could be looking at a month before you get it back. Good luck! They are also rather expensive.

I agree with using Authorizes Photo Service, in Morton Grove, Ill. I used them to repair a 80-400 lens and they did it in about 10 days. I used Nikon in Long Island to adjust my D800e camera and it took 3.5 weeks to send it in, get adjusted and return. But I had to send it back 2 more times so it took a total of 3 months. Very dissatisfied with Nikon and will not go back to them for anything.

Thank you all for your replies. Lots of options. I need to do some testing myself first, I think. It might just need some focus adjustment.

Greg, It would depend on which service center you use for the work. If you send it to the Nikon "authorized" repair center on he east coast, it could take weeks. I live in central Illinois and I use "Authorized Photo Service, 8125 River Drive, Suite 100, Morton Grove, IL 60053 Ph(847)966-4091". They were a Nikon factory service center before Nikon downsized their North American presence a few years ago. They normally only take a week to do most jobs, and if you live close enough (like I do) you can drop off an pick up at their place. They are courteous and flexible enough to work within your timeline. Good luck.

That's good to know. That might be a good option for me. I live downstate but might do a road trip.

If you contact NikonUSA they will probably e-mail you a shipping label so you won't have to pay for shipping.
Shipping time is usually 3-4 business day (for each way) the time it takes for it to get the technician will depend on how busy they are, and the length of time for repair will depend on what needs to be done.
Figure 3-4 weeks.

Before you send any Nikon product to Nikon you had better be certain it was purchased through Nikon U.S.A. If it is grey market, they will not touch it and tell you to send it to Nikon in Japan if it is still under warranty. Grey market is any product that is imported into the United States by anyone else than the manufacturer. They will not even repair it if you are willing to pay for the repair. When I took my SLR in last week they checked the serial number to check if it was grey market.
