Lightroom backup

I back up Lightroom in my Mac
I recently dragged over a savesdLightroom backup that contains about 5000 pictures onto an external hard drive.
The file size was only about 600 Meg's.
Why is that?!? At an average of 5 meg per picture it should be way bigger are these pictures actually being saved?
What is the safest way to save all your pictures in your whole Lightroom program o to an external disk. Thanks

It sounds to me like all you backed up to the drive was the catalog. When you set up Lightroom did you make a file in your pictures folder for Lightroom?

The small backup folder you found is probably a catalog backup, not the photos themselves. When you are asked about backing up in that dialogue box you see sometimes when you close Lightroom, it is the catalog your backing up.

If you use Lightroom to import your photos, you can configure it to make a backup copy of the photos somewhere of your choosing if you'd like.

I don't use LR to download, I use system software for that, so I just go on and make my backup copies on an eternal HD then. I also have my system backup set to back up my photos automatically when it backs everything else up. So I have my primary working files (which are on an external HD), a backup of everything including photos (on another external HD), and a second backup of just photos and catalog files.

As an addendum to my earlier post; I made a Lightroom pictures file when I started using Lightroom and according to finder, there is almost 90gb in my Lightroom Pictures folder when I open pictures in finder.

Remember LR backup is only the catalog. In order to save the photos you need to use another method, separate hard drive cloud storage, Time Machine etc.

I will look into that preference. I'm expecting quite a large file as well.

Lightroom is set up to create a thumbnail of each image AND to remember where you store the original(you tell it where when you set it up). It sounds like you've moved the Lightroom Catilog which contains the Thumbnail images. Where did you tell Lightroom to store your original images? We don't know?I'd Dbl click on my main HD symbol, then on the left side you'll see a symbol of a house-dbl click on that, you'll see a column of choices: look for Pictures and Dbl click on that- you should find all your original images there IF you didn't accidentally throw then away or move them without using Lightroom. Good luck. Do yourself a favor and buy Scott Kelby's book on Lightroom and learn how to set it up.

One more question regarding backups.. Once you've backed up your original photos to an external drive Is it not okay then to trash
all your lightroom catalog backups except for the most recent one?

I Have about 60 backups probably totaling 20 gig!!!

So…..when you open a catalog from your backups you will get the edited photos within lightroom but
When you click on your pictures (saved by date, where you tell lightroom to save) you will just get the original photo

Lightroom>Preferences at the top left there should be pages of choices and options you can make of how you want things set up. Either watch a you tube video on set up or buy a book- making a set up error can cause too many problems later not to do it correctly from the start.

Yes, you can discard the old catalog backups. I keep the last 2-3 of them.
