Nikon D3s memory question

I used my D3s to take some pics yesterday and it did not have a memory card in place. The camera did allow me to take pics and also I was able to review them. Does the camera have an internal memory that would have saved these pics? if so, how do I access them? Or have I lost them all? Thanks for any info you can share. I have definitely learned from this experience.

When I get a new camera, I do two things. I set it to take a picture only when there is a memory card inserted, and I set it to take a picture when I push the button, whether it's in focus or not.

Your manual will tell you how to make the change(s).

Your camera should have enough internal memory for 8-10 pictures. simply upload your images to your computer, phone, or other device. The manual (you might have to get that online) will tell you all about these proceedures. You may have to purchase a usb cable to hook the computer to your camera, but your pictures are in there if you were able to review them. Good luck.

The camera does Not have an internal memory. It does have a buffer that shows images until the buffer is full but will now allow them to be written to a card inserted at a later date. Jerry is correct in telling you that, in order to protect yourself from errors like this, set the camera to not function without a memory card. Note: the reason for the camera showing buffer images is so that the camera can be used in a store as a display without the store constantly replacing stolen or lost memory cards in all of their displays.

Thanks everyone for the information. I was hoping that there was internal memory, but I am not that lucky. It was my mistake for not checking to make sure the card was in place. I was in a hurry to leave home. Lesson learned. Thanks Jerry for the recommendation on camera setting. I am going to work on that today so that this will not happen again. Fortunately some of the pics can be retaken, but some can not.

I've always thought that not being able to click the shutter without a card should be the default.

I have made that exact mistake (usually with my wife's camera since she takes the compact flash card out to upload and then gets into a hurry to go take sunset photos. I grab the cameras, not realizing that she didn't put the card back when she finished uploading, and it's my fault she can't take photos). She has a D70s, I have a D7100 which, fortunately has 2 SD cards in it. I always keep a card in the second slot so that IF I forget to put the first one back, I can still take 550 shots (32mg card) on the second card if I do something silly, like forget to put card 1 back.

I have 2 cards in my D7000 also, but this is a new camera, and the CF cards are more expensive and I haven't bought a second one yet (at least as of yesterday). Have already placed an order for 2 more CF cards today. I keep learning something new.

I suspect that any serious photographer will tell you that part of being a serious photographer is that you are constantly learning from other people (regardless of their skill) and constantly trying new things. Some ideas you keep and others you decide are not for you. We all are constantly learning from each other here.

My bad, used to be they all had a small memory cache. The buffer should hold well enough to get the few images to a card for upload tho I think

Ditto this. Jerry is dead on about a new camera.
