Problem with Rearranging Photos in PSE13

I have a group of RAW files in an album in my Elements 13. Previously, I have been able to move images around simply by holding down my mouse key and gently guiding the image to its new location. However, now PSE13 has decided to get quirky on me and will not let me move any of the images to new positions. I do see the little hand as I click on an image. When I attempt to move it, however, a rectangular box shows up, other images are blue-checked and a circle with a line through it tells me I did a no-no.

Does anyone have an idea why this is happening? Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what you mean by "moving them around."
Are you talking about the Editor or the Organizer of PSE?

Usually when I open a bunch of photos at once in the PSE editor, I don't care a lot what order they are in. If for some reason that is important, I open them in that order.

If you're talking about the organizer, I'm afraid someone else has to come to the rescue as I don't use the organizer at all.

Thank you for your thoughts. I am specifically concerned with not being able to rearrange images in the Organizer.
Short of uninstalling/reinstalling PSE 13, I would like to see if there is something that I am missing.

Thanks for the reply. I have Picasa as well and, yes, moving images around is very easy. It should not be a difficult task with PSE13 as I have done it before. I just don't know why I cannot do it now.

I saw a similar thread about Elements 13. They couldn't scroll the photos for viewing in Organizer with the mouse wheel. I think the answer had to do with editing the mouse operation preferences in Organizer. I use PSE 11 and have been leary of upgrading to 13 because of its quirks. Good luck.

I have found PSE13 to be very quirky. I posted my question in the Adobe forum and someone was kind enough to supply me with the answer to my problem. It seems the problem is with the "sort by" menu in the Organizer screen. If you choose "newest" or "oldest," you cannot move the images around. If, however, you choose "album order," each image is assigned a number and with your mouse can be repositioned. Thank you for responding and good luck if/when you move to Elements 13.

Thanks for the memories. I had the same problem once but forgot about it.

Did you recently change to Window7. Windows 7 does not allow dragging images to different locations in the same folder. Whether this affects operations in the Organizer of PSE13 would not surprise me. XP and Vista previously allowed organizing images by dragging to new locations within the same folder.

Windows 7 will appear to drag, but when dropped will simply revert to whatever filter is chosen... Name alpha or digit order, file size, etc. This makes it difficult to order images in a "sort" that will facilitate a slide presentation.

So, I think you are dealing with an OS problem. There is an obscure command change, made up of two files that you insert into the registry that allows one to drag files to any order. However, this can only be used if your Pictures folders are OUTSIDE the Libraries system folders.

I've been working with a client on doing slide presentations, and it is very difficult to keep a sort order that will remain consistent without making these registry changes to the OS and then working outside Libraries.

This problem has been whined about in huge numbers by users since Windows 7 made that change, and I have researched the problem considerably. Aside from all the user "bitching" about this change, there appears to be no change forthcoming from Microsoft.

Again... not a PSE problem, but rather an operating system limitation. And only pertaining to Windows 7... don't know about 8 or 10 on this point.

Thanks for posting that to this forum. Makes sense, and gives me a solution for my client. I was looking at the OS as the culprit and did not pick up on that "album order" solution in PSE13. A reasonable solution within the software.

My client has PSE10 and now I wonder if that's the case there as well. I do know the change made in Windows 7 to not allow repositioning other than create a real file naming sequence that fit the filters in 7 raise a real "stink" all over the internet.

Who'da Thunk?
