I saw a 50 mm 1.8 II on Craiglist and when I met with the person, he also had a 40 mm. Both excellent condition. I threw out an offer and I now have both.

(I'm now wondering why I did that, but that's besides the point. LOL)

My question is: I don't see much of a difference in the two, except for DoF. Should I keep the 40? And if so, why.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Tony

The 50mm 1.8 is well know as Canon's "Nifty Fifty. It's a low cost lens with very good optics and low light capabilities.
The 40mm 2.8, I don't own and have therefore not used, is an "STM" lens. This means it uses a stepper motor for focusing. It has been said that this makes it quick to maintain focus while shooting video if your camera is capable. Also it is said to be much quieter while focusing. Apparently other lens' USM motor sound can be picked up by the audio recording device of the camera. The "STM" lenses were created to alleviate this issue for videography.
Other Hoggers may have more to add to this.

I bought the 40 because of the small size.

I have a 60D. It is a good lens for what it is. I carry it in my pocket when ridding my mike. The camera is in a case with my 75 to 300 zoom. It serves my purpose to have a wider angle lens when needed.

The shorty 40 is a remarkably good lens sharp and silent and fits both FF and cropped cameras. I like it because its not in your face (subjects) when doing street shots. On a 70d it's close to your traditional "standard" lens. Have'nt had a play with the 50 so I can't add any value in comparing

Appreciate the feedback. Don't do much video, but will consider it when I do. Good comment about the street shots. Time will tell if I use it or decide to sell it. Thanks.

Love the 40. It is a street lens, very quick focusing, and unobtrusive.

Remember, with the 70D you have a cropped sensor. Thus the 40mm covers 1.6x40=64mm, that is it acts like a 64mm lens on a full frame camera. And the 50mm=80mm on a FF camera. Thus the 40mm acts like a little more reach than a "normal" 50mm on a FF camera and the 50mm acts like a slight telephoto. P.S. I also have a 70D.

Canon has just come out with a new 50 1.8 STM lens. Looks like it's only $125 and has a metal mount as well. Not sure it's currently available, but will be very soon. Check it out at B&H.

The 40 on the 70D works well for video. EoS User nailed it when he mentioned no noise in recording.

Bike not Mike sorry.

I use to work for a printing company. They printed the phone books for the southwestern US.

The phone books were set in lead lineatype. The decided to try me at proof reading. That did not last long and I was out of the type setting department back on the printing press.

Played around with the 2.8 40 stm this morning. The camera body was a 60D.

Shot with both lenses for a while and pick the one you like better. They are rather redundant. But how often do you get to do your own side by side comparisons.

I would probably go with the 40mm, for it's very small size and better autofocus. But, hey, that's just me. You might feel the opposite.

Are you using spot metering mode? Just wondering because your first image is perfectly exposed and the second one.... of the white flower... looks to be a stop or more underexposed.

It was set to Evaluative metering.

I can never remember the icon meaning. I speak English not Hieroglyphics. Sorry one of my hangups.

The white overwhelmed the metering. The leaves are a lot dark.

Can be improved in processing.
