These were all shots on my property...all were shot at 600mm, f/5.6, 800 ISO, and shutter speeds between 1500-2000. Still learning...but wanted to share.

I actually just sold it due to its weight. Too hard for me to hand hold. I have a Canon 100-400mm II and 1.4 Extender on order. Can't wait to see how they work out!

Laura, at 600mm you're aperture opening on that lens is 6.3. It is 5 at 150mm. Also re effective focal length fro that lens on a 7D (crop frame) is ~900mm. So you should get away with dropping your shutter speed as low as 1/100th. That will still get the birds with some wing movement, but you will be able to drop your ISO to ~600 and reduce the noise level somewhat.

Thanks for this...yes, I was playing around with high ISOs after reading some posts on here and I realize I over did it. They are quite noisy!

Don't bother with the extender. For the little gain in magnification it is just more weight. I know this well. I/we also use a Canon 100-400 lens(that's about 600mm on your crop camera). At the moment it is still the most versatile lend for sports and wildlife they ideal. DON'T try and see how far away you can shoot from. Get a little closer, and that applies to large animals as well.

I'm certainly no pro at this, but have been at it a while and made most of the errors. ;)
