The Canon 5D Mark II is an excellent camera for both still and video photography and, as far as I know, is currently available new for a good price. Canon makes a huge variety of EF lenses for that camera. The lens I use most often with my 5D II is the 24-70 mm f/2.8. That lens may cost you more than the 5D II body, but it's worth the price, in my estimation.

Personally, I think the 70D is the best value for a video capable dslr.

Don't go crazy. Keep it simple. The REBEL is a great beginner's camera. Don't let the gear guys pressure you into buying at the highest end.

I knew someone was going to throw this in the mix. The 6D had or has particular problems in Video with "moire patterns". Don't know of it's fixed.

Hell of a camera for stills, but originally screwed up in video. Won't go into the details unless you want, but a third party company designed a fix to install in the camera for the video function. It's a $365 solution that is apparently selling because Canon did not step up to the plate with a fix early on, if they did at all.

Here is a link, demo and information about the problem and the solution from a third party:

The OP did specifically state Video. The Canon 5D MKII is reputed to have better video, and even then, better than the 5D MKIII.

Face it head on!! You claimed blame, twice,,you were late and you forgot about the return in your closet. That clerk was doing their job. Some of their customers are internal, some external. Say again after me, I was wrong. I have been there, done it. Some times favorable resolution can be made by getting on your knees and asking for another chance. Reach out to them, eat crow in front of them, ask for a management type and mea culpa. Maybe this time they may be willing to help. Be contrite and willing to accept what ever the results are. At least you tried. Not everything is in our control. Just my 2 cents worth. Blessings, Maury Maybe

I know it does not relate but...I am so firkin pissed off at Cannon I could rip the place a new outdoor rest room. I was 2 days late getting a return back to them. They are refusing delivery and its going to come back. I was very very nice and explained that it was in my closet and I forgot totally forgot about it. After the praise I have spread about them and the money I have spent some little clerk made the wrong decision involving me. Customer service and goodwill...someone lend me a bulldozer/backhoe/tank
I know it does not relate but...I am so firkin pis... (show quote)

I have a young friend who is just beginning in digital SLR photography and is interested in a Canon camera with video capabilities. What are some models (as well as lenses) that might be suitable for him? Thanks for your help.

The best value in the photo industry is the canon 7d. It's a 1400 dollar camera selling for about $700 while they last. Its a great camera and does video very well. It is not a beginner camera, but for the money you can't do better. While some have upgraded from the 7d to the MK2 version, The 7d remains as a great buy.

I'm currently shooting the Canon t3i for stills but mostly video and have had excellent results with it. This camera though discontinued (I believe) is still available through
Amazon and other dealers.

It shoots excellent full 1080 video and has external audio for mounting a better microphone - than the on board.

I always shoot with my 18-55 lens. It's an IS lens so it gives me a steady cam look. Also shooting at 18mm it's wide enough to help hide hand movement.

I calmed down and emailed and apologized for any inconvenience I would cause them but did mention that if there was a scratch anywhere that it wouldn't be nice as they are getting a camera in new just out of the box condition. Gee its great being humble..I hope they find it in their hearts to forgive me and I promise I will never bother them again. I think its time for a blood pressure pill

A Canon EOS 70D would be a good choice.

I also have a T3i, and it does do decent video with an external mic, but the T5i has better video capabilities especially with STM lenses. It should be available at pretty decent prices now that the T6i / T6s are hitting the streets.

And did I say Magic Lantern loudly enough? :D

OK, what is it you tried to return. And why? Maybe someone on the hog will want to buy it and help you salvage part of the expense.

As somebody else said, you seem to want to blame Canon for your own mistakes. It was worth a try but I'm having difficulty coming up with a lot of sympathy here. Certainly no empathy.

Maybe it is time for you to own your own shit, to use your own vernacular.

Are you 13 or what?

Back off....I own my own shit and own up to my mistakes...sympathy from you I could care less as I never wanted it...all I wanted was a company that I have done business with to show a little leeway when a small yes small mistake was made on my part...am I 13 its been 57 years since I have seen 13 but I am not going to get dragged into a match across the country with a rude individual,,,,much better to do it face to face
