how about that blue "painters tape" from 3M... seems like it's stickiness is less than other tape and is designed to be removed after painting. Anybody use this stuff?

Problem isthat it is paper and not very strong. For very light items it's ok but I would not use it on any thing of real value.

Came by post 2 days ago, and let me tell you, it′s the handiest item in my camera bag! No longer have to screw filters on and off, or bayonet the hood, don′t need a tripod (tape the camera to a post), sticks a flash diffuser in place, keeps my hat from blowing off - just a multitude of uses. I′ll never go back to masking or duct tape again. Thanks for letting me share my excitement over my latest acquisition ... excuse me, have to go take the cat off the wall.

I agree, they are countless uses for Gaff, I always carry at least one roll in my bag!

Have had better luck with the "Frog tape" (green) than the blue. The frog tape seems to stick better and come off easier, but it is also more expensive.

Painter's tape is for masking, not heavy-duty attaching. It tears easily under load, so it's not for cameras.

Green Frog ape is for masking delicate surfaces. For sheetrock, blue 3M tape is fine. I have tried off-brands, but 3M is preferable.

Amazon offers it'

In a pinch you can use masking tape and spray it Flat Black.

Electrical tape is shiny. Both will get gooey in the sun or the heat from lamps.

If left on for a long time, the residue can be quite difficult to remove.

I just purchased some of the blue painters tape manufactured by Scotch that is designed to be used outside and is made of a plastic or plastic like material. I bought this at a local Home Depot. I think it is this product: http://www.homedepot.com/p/ScotchBlue-1-88-in-x-45-yds-Exterior-Surfaces-Painter-s-Tape-2097-48EC/203878656

It seemed a bit stronger than the paper version, definitely resistant to tearing, and comes off easily even after exposure to sunlight. Not as strong as gaffers tape, but it may be useful. However it is expensive!

I keep a few wraps on a tripod leg and some of my light stands. It's there and handy, just in case I need it.

From THIS SITE:
"Gaff Tape (also Gaffer’s Tape): This special grade of duct tape (often colored black) was developed by the entertainment industry to hold lighting equipment and cables in place and has a dull finish so that it won’t reflect lights.
Gaff Tape also has a specially formulated, less tacky adhesive that won’t leave a residue when it is removed."

And real gaff tape won't pass light so you can form on-the-spot flash modifiers with it!

Painter's tape is great for holding lightweight items like paper. I would never try to hold my camera with it. I have used gaffer's tape at -40C (-40F is the same temp), at 30,000 ft in 160+ MPH wind. It held cables in place! I would never put duct tape on my lens, but for night photography (aurora), I always tape my lenses focus ring. Also cover the white light on my headlamp so only the red LED shows. Repair tripods, etc.
