Nikon 1 V3, Nikon 1 30-110 mm lens plus Vello 16 mm extension tube and Nikon SB500 flash mounted on homemade wooden ground pod. Allows shooting up from the ground with getting on the ground.
This looks cool. Did you make that base, or find it like that somewhere?
I've found that I can often clip a branch off of a plant and bring the critter indoors where I have a much more amenable setting to photograph said bug. Lighting, angles & that all-important second chance.... basically just about everything needed to produce a good photo are possible. Of course, flying bugs don't count.... but lady bugs ( I know they fly!), spiders, praying mantis' and such are keen subjects.

It is a homemade wooden ground pod. It is made from oak but any wood should work. It does not have to be as fancy as the one I made. I found some wide oak scraps from a neighbor's stair project and I have woodworking tools. A small tripod with the legs spread flat that does not have a center shaft or removable shaft will work too.
I can't wait to show this to my husband. It's exactly what I've been needing. Thanks so much for posting your setup and beautiful shot of the lacewing, Jerry.
