Interesting to see the rotary engine making a comeback. As I recall the original one was from Wankel in Germany then in the early Mazda RX series. If memory serves me correct the original rotaries were used in aircraft during WWII.

they died out during the '73 gas crisis... powerful, lightweight, but not so efficient.

IIRC pretty high oil consumption, at least in the earlier versions.

It baffles me why anybody would want such a powerful vehicle. I suppose if you have access to a track for the infrequent race, but for the daily commute in rush hour traffic, it is the wrong car.

The RX6 was, I believe, the first to use it. It was very smooth and would redline high. Engine noise was a whine (a friend had one) but reliability was an issue. Glad to see it still around.

They also were terrible on emissions. The early designs had significant issues with blow by at the rotary seals. The poor gas mileage and emissions pretty much killed it from markets where emission standards were being adopted.

I'm sure psychologists would equate it to testosterone substitution, or some such. If they ever get the emission/seal/reliability issues solved, it will make a great lightweight powerplant.

I think you are right about that equation.
