I caught this guy in a beating square. He was kind enough to pose for several shots before scurrying beneath the wooden cross slats. I wanted a few more pics so I teased him out with a large leaf and.................when he emerged, he had already caught some lunch. These little guys dont waste any time.
hard to believe that something that small can find something even smaller than itself to eat...great shot's

Somebody please explain: what is a "beating square"?

Another more commonly used name for it is a 'beating sheet'. It's a light colored (close to white) cloth sheet, about 3 feet square, that is held beneath vegetation while the limbs/leaves are shaken by hitting them with a stick. The idea is that insects hiding in the vegetation will be shaken off onto the sheet, from which they can be collected (and/or photographed).
http://mississippientomologicalmuseum.org.msstate.edu/collecting.preparation.methods/Beating.sheet.htm#.VU3r25PLqKII usually don't move the insects from the sheet, though occasionally I may find something really special and want to slow them down. You can put them in a jar, and then into the refrigerator for a few minutes.
But usually, after getting some stuff in the 'square', I just lay it down and try to coax the subject onto a leaf or stem, then move in for the photo. As all of you know, insects aren't always the most cooperative things and want to walk/run/fly away. So shoot fast, shoot often, get creative.
