Looks more like a Red Tailed to me but could possibly be a juve Red Shouldered as well, hard to tell at times. Nice photos by the way.

It looks like the red tailed hawk has a more solid colored tail, I still think it's the red shouldered hawk. Anyone else???

Thank you photoman and cvbirder, I think it is a young bird. Thanks for the tip on bird ID, I was just kind of wondering what UHH birders thought. Thanks for sticking with it Gidgette, we are both pretty sure of the red part. Phil

Me too Goddess, These were taken in a wetland so I think that is exactly what he was doing. Sometimes it is just for ventilation. With tail and wings fanned I get confused. In flight position that tail could look red, esp with the back light. Oh well I think I have been confusing red tail/shoulder hawks for years. Thanks for looking.
