I am uncertain what purpose the "download" feature is on many of the photographs here. Is it for us to post process our version of the photo? There was one today that showed a picture of Eddie Cantor with a request to download the second photo which was of an insect with the same kind of bulging eyes Eddie had. I clicked on download which merely opened a large size that I suppose I could have saved but why would I want to? Didn't look like it needed any improvement to me.

The download is to show usually a much larger version of the image, and one that included the EXIF information of the image.

Not necessarily to enable an actual download.

Sometimes the downloaded view is much brighter and clearer than the thumbnail. It's just a way to better see the true image, especially the clarity.

Don't edit pics without invitation :)

When you just post the picture it is highly reduced copy. If you click on store original it enables viewers to see the full size photo. Then the viewer can save it or drag to there desktop. Where if it is requested it can be loaded into a post processing program for modification. And reposted.
