My lens stopped focusing, am I missing something?

I was doing a shot today with my Nikon 17-35 2.8 and had to brake for the customer to take a lunch. When we went back to the shot, my lens would not auto focus. I was able to complete the shots needed with that lens manually, but it just won't auto focus. I tried it on my D700 and it still didn't work. I cleaned the contacts, didn't hear any squeaks prior to it stopping or noises for that matter. Love the lens and will send it in to Nikon unless someone has an idea. It wasn't dropped and was safely placed in my padded camera case still on the D810 while we broke for lunch. Any ideas?

Ok, let me ask a dumb question... camera & lens set to auto focus mode?

Perhaps switch auto focus off & on a few times?

My suggestion would have been to clean the contacts real good with isopropyl alcohol and do what Don said, switching everything on and off. When this has come up before, sometimes resetting the camera to factory defaults has worked. The fact it doesn't work on another body doesn't sound good. Seems like you've already done your due diligence. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

Sometimes this happens to me with various lenses and it is corrected by jiggling the lens in its mount. The lens contacts might not have matched up exactly as they should the first try.

Sorry about taking so long to respond, but the shot got me tired out and I went to bed early and now have a Drs. appointment on my legs. I did check all the settings I know about which should cover it. Took the battery out a couple of times. I even let my wife try what she knew to do on it (how unmanly of me). I now remember that shortly after i bought it knew, the focus failed and the camera shop I bought it from sent it in to Nikon for service. That was about September of 2012. Maybe Nikon has record of that service and will warranty the repair in some way.

That may well point to a problem coming back. Good luck!

Have you checked that the toggle button on the back of the camera hasn't set itself to the 'L' position? I've tripped myself up with that one a couple of times. Also on my camera, the D300s, there are the 3 buttons on the front of the camera next to the lens on the left side, C,S and M. If the slider has been nudged up to the M position it will only manual focus. Caught myself on that one, too, and had to face the humiliation of having the camera pro at my local store give me the pitying grin while he flipped the switch for me. Ugghhh, lol.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've tried even that. However, I don't think that switch would have anything to do with this problem. The lens was used when I bought it and Nikon probably did only what they had to to get it running again for the camera store since the store paid that bill. I'm thinking more and more that its the lens motor.

This happened to my 17-35 2.8 lens years ago; turned out the problem was a micro-crack in the circuit board in the lens itself- nothing to do with battery charge or contact cleanliness. Hopefully Nikon will consider this second instance for you to still be under warranty (I sold my 17-35 a while back).

My thought, too, but the problem continued on a different camera.
