Which is the best lens that I own for Prom pics?

I'm taking Prom pictures tomorrow of my grandson. I have a new camera (D7100) and new lenses that I didn't have when the 1st 2 grand children went to Prom. I was thinking that the 24-70/f 2.8 would be the best lens for the job. I always carry the 50/1.4 lens, but I was wondering if I should bring the other 2 primes as well (35 & 85). Also, I will have the 500 speedlight with me, but is the 900 a better choice? The pictures will be taken outside.

I didn't have this "problem" before when I only had one camera & 3 lenses!

Your zoom and the 85mm would probably have you covered very well. The 85 is a great portrait lens, and you will have lots of opportunities with it. The zoom will cover almost everything else. GL and have fun.

I would second the 24-70 and the 85. Both great lenses and will serve you well with the prom photos you plan on taking.
You should not need the flash if outdoors, unless shooting in the shade.

They are both great lenses and will do the job. The 85 F/1.8 is probably better for portraits than the 24-70 f/2.8.

I would use the 85mm and the SB900 flash. For outdoors expose for the background then lower by 1 to 2 stops and use the flash to raise the exposure on your subjects making them the focus of the photo. Your subject will be sharper and brighter then the blurred background, this combination is most pleasing to the eye.

I'll add an amen to the 24-70. I volunteered to photograph my grandson's wedding and used the 24-70/f2.8 on a D-610 with an SB-910 flash.

The 24-70 is really all you need. Why in the world would anyone take a second lens with a single focal length only 15 mm greater than your 24-70?

When on a shoot . . . any shoot . . . use the "kiss" principle.

Extra equipment that is not necessary will bog you down, slow you down, confuse you, cost you time that could make you miss important photo ops, and subject you to increased chances of theft or loss of equipment.

Spend your time using your creativity with the subject . . . not experimenting with different combinations of equipment.

Just my humble opinion . . . again

The picture I showed was pre-prom. Everyone gathered in a room. I had all the control I needed. If I was shooting the Prom itself I would treat it as a wedding and have my D800 with the 24-70 on one side of the harness and the D700 with the 70-200 on the other side. Both with QFLASHs on them. There are times, when the action gets going and also when you see things from afar where your 24-70 will not cut it. Just ask yourself what is the environment.

Is that a muslin backdrop? Looks like you have some significant wrinkles in it creating distracting lines especially behind and around the couple's heads.

This won't help GrandmaG by tomorrow and I don't intend to derail the discussion but...

This is exactly why I bought a 24-120mm f/4 lens. There is so much hype about the 24-70, and well-deserved. I went to a camera store intent on buying one, but instead walked out with a 24-120, 2/3 the price, only one-stop difference in max aperture, and much greater zoom range.

Tomorrow I'll be shooting an outdoor birthday party, 50 kids, bounce house, face painting, games, etc., then the adult party starts when the kids go home. :D The 24-120mm will probably be the only lens I use.

Just wanted to point out that in the quest for the "holy trinity", this is a lens that is too often overlooked as a great alternative.

Yeah I know, I neglected to bring my steamer with me, This was a pretty laxed shoot so I was arguing with myself as I was walking out the door about bringing it. I removed a lot of the wrinkles with Content-Aware fill. Not all though. Normally I steam the backdrop and I have tension clips to keep it taught after I remove the wrinkles. Home Shopping Network store, $8 for two steamers, a little guy and a big guy.

Didn't the Trinity have 4 Gods, Demi-Gods, spirits in it before it was called the Holy Trinity. Considering this, I will promote religion and add this lens to my collection when the time is right so I too have 4 lens in my Trinity. they should actually call it the 'Fab Five' and add to 105 to it also.
